Objectomania

The Kröller-Müller Project

TAMTAM object theatre’s Gérard Schiphorst and Marije van der Sande made the visual performance Objectomania as artists-in-residence at the famous Kröller-Müller Museum for modern art. This cross-over between theatre, music and fine arts contains exclusive video material of extreme close-ups of the museum’s famous art.

Synopsis
Once, long before man existed, there was the object.
The earth was inhabited by things.
Strange creatures that are now almost extinct.
We call this era Objectomania.
The time of the objects.when mankind came, the objects got subjected and were made servants to the new inhabitants of the world.
Now man imagines himself the crown of creation and lives in cities full of tamed things.
But it could very well be that the objects will survive the humans.

Objectomania displays the special universe of TAMTAM and their reaction on the collection of the museum. In July 2011 this extraordinary production has been shown 64 times in the museum’s specially adapted information centre. Afterwards it was shown some 18 times more in their workshop-theatre in Deventer.

Found objects and famous paint
TAMTAM is a visually-driven theatre that has travelled the world’s festivals and theatres for 32 years with its mainly text-free performances. Museums and galleries have rapidly discovered the unusual, visual power of these performances and this summer, the Kröller-Müller Museum added to that with an invitation to turn their information centre into an object-art room.
Schiphorst and Van der Sande have always been inspired by found objects, and consequentially, by found space. Add the Kröller-Muller museum with its special atmosphere and famous art collection to TAMTAM’s own collection of discarded materials, rusty tools, and broken toys and you will stumble upon the foundations of this new performance.

Video close-ups of paintings
Whilst researching this project in the information centre, it quickly became clear that the museum’s massive 18-feet screen was one of the talents of this room that could not be ignored. TAMTAM has developped a unique system of showing images on the screen that amplify the atmosphere of the scene that’s performed below it. Objectomania uses images that have been recorded mere inches away from the famous art in posession of the Kröller-Müller museum, mixing nature and close-ups of objects with paintings of Mondriaan and Van Gogh, creating a completely new world full of undiscovered meanings.

Objectomania
TAMTAM’s fascination with things that others discard opens up a discussion about whether there is still time to love something, to cherish one’s surroundings and everything inhabiting it? To be charmed by old, cracked objects and materials that have lost their function but have enough other unexpected talents to offer.
This is what the title of this performance also signifies. Ojectomania has infected today’s society: the economy is fuelled by inventing, creating, transporting, selling, buying, using, discarding, repairing, recycling and dumping things. What you buy today will be SO yesterday tomorrow.
Everything needs to be newer, better, faster, prettier, and even a human being is a makeable fabrication that can be rebuilt and smoothed as one pleases.
