Music and Soundtracks

Gérard Schiphorst has been composing and performing the music and soundtracks for TAMTAM’s performances for over 45 years. Since most of the performances are wordless, the music has always been crucial. Visual soundtracks, audio that enhances the audience’s perception or complements the images with atmospheres and rhythms.

Comissioned Soundtracks
The good news is that Gérard is now available to create music for performances and other projects.
This can be performed live during the show or pre-recorded in the studio. Contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Multi-instrumentalist
He is a multi-instrumentalist and plays anything with keys or strings. He also plays a variety of percussion, drums, and wind instruments.

The performances also often use the sounds of the objects used as actors, sometimes computer-edited.

Gérard masters many different musical styles: whether ethnic, electronic, ambient, rhythmic, rippling, abrasive, or abstract, the sonic idiom and sound are determined by the nature of the production.
Examples can be heard in the various YouTube videos on the TAMTAM channel.

Compositions and Sounds
Ultimately, all compositions and sounds are combined into a fitting soundtrack. Each production is different, sometimes vibrantly colourful and rich in different moods, sometimes very restrained with just a few instruments. But always precisely tailored.

Custom Soundtrack
In close consultation with the creators, Gérard can create a customized soundtrack for a performance, video, or visual project. Since he is not only a musician but also a director and performer with over 45 years of experience in visual theatre, he can easily empathize with the needs of other theater makers.

The soundtrack can be delivered fully edited or as individual tracks for use in Show Cue Systems, for example. The complete programming of these tracks can also be part of the commission.

Theatricality
Gérard’s music is characterized by a high theatricality without obstructing the visuals. His compositions always reflect the atmosphere of the entire performance, guided by the role of the various scenes in the play’s development.

Sometimes raw and intense when necessary, sometimes whisper-soft and subtle.

Live
He occasionally performs during the performances, but because his hands are often indispensable as a manipulator in the scenes, live music has remained relatively limited in TAMTAM productions.

It is almost a tradition, in most of the performances, for Gérard to welcome the audience with live music.

He can also be hired for live accompaniment, for example, to theatre or dance productions.

Soundtracks for art

On Sunday, August 24 and Sunday, September 28, musician, theatre creator, and visual artist Gérard Schiphorst will perform live, improvised soundtracks insired by the art in the main hall of Museum Eicas in Deventer, The Netherlands. He will play a 70-year-old Egmond guitar, a Dutch product with a very unique timbre. It’s an ideal instrument for responding to the works and the atmosphere of the museum and complementing the viewer’s perception.
The idea for these live sessions arose when, while visiting the exhibition, Gérard dropped something small in the main hall. Thanks to the hall’s incredible acoustics, it became a huge sound. This immediately inspired him to create live music there.

Gérard Schiphorst has been composing, recording and producing the music and soundtracks for TAMTAM objektentheater’s performances for over 45 years.
Since most performances are wordless, the music is always very important. He creates visual soundtracks with music and noises. Audio that optimizes the audience’s experience and complements the images with atmospheres and rhythms.

Dates and times: Sunday, August 24th and Sunday, September 28th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. 15-minute sessions every hour.

Below is a small test I did in the main hall of Museum Eicas, without amplification, without effects, just the acoustics of the room.
